Chiang Mai Weather and Best Times to Visit

8816262
The Highland Climate Guide — Burning Season and Beyond

Chiang Mai’s climate differs meaningfully from Bangkok’s. The northern highlands produce cooler temperatures, more defined seasons, and a burning season consideration that has become the city’s most discussed environmental challenge.

Chiang Mai’s Three Seasons
Cool Season — November to February

Legitimately cool — night temperatures can drop to 10-15 degrees C (50-60 F) in December and January, requiring a light jacket for evenings. Days are warm and clear, ranging from 20-28 degrees C. Mountain hikes, cycling routes, and outdoor cafes come fully into their own.

November through February: Chiang Mai at its finest — mild days, cool evenings, crystal-clear mountain views

Burning Season — March to April

Agricultural burning in the surrounding highlands creates smoke conditions that can be severe in March and April. The AQI regularly exceeds hazardous levels (300+), making outdoor activity inadvisable. Many long-term expats leave Chiang Mai for these two months as a standard annual practice. Those who stay manage with air purifiers, masks, and limited outdoor exposure.

March and April: burning season is Chiang Mai’s genuine challenge — plan to travel during this period or invest in serious air purification

Rainy Season — June to October

Monsoon rains bring afternoon rain that cools the city significantly and turn the surrounding mountains an extraordinary deep green. The air clears dramatically after burning season. Waterfalls around the city reach peak flow and the city’s food and cafe culture continues undimmed.

June through October: Chiang Mai’s green season — beautiful, affordable, and a relief after burning season.

Best Time to Relocate to Chiang Mai

November through February is definitively the best arrival window. Arriving during burning season (March-April) is not recommended for someone establishing themselves — the air quality can be a jarring introduction to a city that otherwise delivers exceptional quality of life.
