A powerful earthquake struck Chocó, Colombia, causing significant damage to homes and displacing families across the region. Chocó is one of the most densely Afro Colombian areas in the country, home to communities with deep cultural and historical roots along Colombia’s Pacific coast.
Many of these communities were already under resourced before the earthquake, which makes long term, community led recovery essential, not optional.
Afro Colombian communities with a history stretching back centuries along Colombia’s Pacific coast, connected to the broader African diaspora across the Americas.
Emergency supplies, housing support, and sustained, community led rebuilding, not a one time response.
News cycles move on quickly. The rebuild in Chocó will take months, and support tends to disappear long before the work is finished.
